The Village of La Grange recently celebrated the start of the Holiday Season with its Tree Lighting Ceremony. New Christmas trees lining La Grange Road and near the playground were lit up in traditional Christmas colors. This year, a new addition to the tree lighting ceremony was StoryWalk, a collaboration between the community park district and La Grange Park Library. The concept is the brainchild of a librarian in Montpelier, Vermont.

With 687,000 Christmas bulbs, the display is nearly twice as large as the previous record. The display is powered by more than 40 miles of extension cords.

The display began with only 600 Christmas lights in 1995. It was originally meant to celebrate the birth of Tim’s daughter, Emily. Over the years, the display has gotten bigger. It now spans eight miles and boasts 686,811 lights. The display has also been the backdrop for 19 marriage proposals. The show is so popular that it has inspired the Welsh’s three children to take over the project. It requires countless hours of planning and physical labor.
