The couple lost their partner in the 2004 Asian tsunami
Survivors of the 2004 Asian tsunami have lost many close friends and family members. But for a couple living in Bristol, the loss of their partner in that disaster changed their lives forever.
John and Jackie Knill were on a beach in Khao Lak, Thailand when the tsunami struck. Their home was destroyed by the calamity, leaving the couple to rely on a dwindling income and a large family. They lived in a small displacement colony of about 1,200 people. In the aftermath of the disaster, the couple had to rely on their friends and family for support, even going so far as to take four children with them when they moved. They never found their 13-year-old daughter.
While some survivors sought higher ground, others walked over a hump before the storm destroyed their homes. Others attended religious services and beachside memorials. Others raised $14 billion in aid to help the devastated region. These efforts helped thousands of families rebuild their lives.
Survivors like Judith McLaughlin spoke about their experiences in As It Happens from Bangkok. She climbed over twisted debris to get to a hotel, and then boarded a long boat to safety.
While the tsunami destroyed millions of lives in Southeast Asia, the largest number of deaths came in countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Thailand, Indonesia, India and Malaysia were among the nations hardest hit. In Thailand, more than 5,000 people were killed. In Indonesia, more than 170,000 people died. In India, the epicenter of the quake was in the southern part of the country, where more than 6,000 people were killed.
The tsunami robbed thousands of children of their parents. It also destroyed ancestral lands, leaving many families without homes. Some families had to build new homes, while others lived in blue tarps as temporary shelters.
In a post-tsunami survey, two-thirds of severely damaged communities moved to new residences in four months. The rate of residence change was 10 times greater in heavily damaged areas, compared to the rest of the world.
In the aftermath of the tsunami, survivors have become advocates for those who were affected by the disaster. The Happy Hearts Fund, founded by Petra Nemcova, helps people in disaster-affected communities build new schools.
They love outdoor activities
HGTV’s Nate and Jeremiah have a knack for modernizing old family homes. They recently sold a West Village townhouse for $13.5 million. And the couple is currently filming season two of their show. They recently commissioned a study which found that more than half of parents are concerned that their kids aren’t spending enough time outdoors. In fact, children only spend about eight minutes outside on average.
The big question is: How do we encourage our children to get outside? One way is to encourage the outdoors-o-mania. A recent survey found that children spend the equivalent of seven hours inside during the course of a typical day. As a result, modern kids have access to an abundance of streaming channels and aren’t getting as much fresh air as they should. In other words, the HGTV aficionados know that if you want your kids to enjoy the outdoors, you need to make it more fun.
There are a few ways to achieve this. First, they should have a soft place to land. For example, a shady backyard is a great place to unwind. Another is to plan a family day out incorporating outdoor activities such as a picnic.
Another way to get kids outdoors is to make use of their imaginations. For example, Jeremiah Brent has a great suggestion. He and his wife, Rachel Zoe, have two kids, Poppy, 7, and Oskar, 4. Oskar loves to watch a movie, but he would rather spend his free time chasing butterflies. This led to Brent’s idea to create an indoor butterfly habitat, complete with a faux butterfly. The idea proved to be a hit with Poppy and Oskar. And it is a good idea for parents everywhere.
HGTV’s Nate and Jeremiah are no strangers to outdoor activities. As a matter of fact, the show’s creators have a lot of fun in their backyard. One of their favorite activities is picnicking. They also like to play hopscotch. Another fun activity involves lighting a candle.
Hopefully these tips will help you get your kids outside for a few more minutes. After all, everyone deserves a soft place to land.
